This piece of elm was excavated from the Jaffa trench Yrpes which was built by the Germans who used timber posts and lattice work to line their trenchs.

I decided to turn a winged bowl a bit tricky as the wood is puncky.

The wood is very soft i decided to soak it in cellulose lacquer.

Still rather soft

I decided to carve a pair of poppys and left the finish straight off the chisel.

The back i sanded and wax polished off to Belgium now back to the owner of the trench from which it came.
